General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), announced two key technological advances related to its ongoing Sense and Avoid (SAA) system development for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).
In collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Honeywell, GA-ASI tested a proof-of-concept SAA system, marking the first successful test of the FAA's Airborne Collision Avoidance System for Unmanned Aircraft (ACAS XU).
The company also performed the first flight tests of a pre-production air-to-air radar for SAA, called the Due Regard Radar (DRR), making it the first radar of its kind designed for a Remote Piloted Aircraft.
The tests is a major step forward for integrating RPA safely into domestic and international airspace.
A functional flight test of GA-ASI's SAA system-which includes automatic collision avoidance and a sensor fusion capability designed to provide the pilot on the ground with a clear picture of the traffic around the aircraft, occurred on September 4, 5, and 10 at GA-ASI's Gray Butte Flight Operations Facility in Palmdale, California, onboard a Predator B RPA.
During the test, Predator B proved the functionality of ACAS XU during collision avoidance maneuvers against ADS-B and transponder-equipped aircraft executed automatically onboard the RPA with the pilot ready to override the system.
Automatically executing collision avoidance maneuvers will enable Predator B to maintain safety in the National Airspace System in the unlikely event of a loss of the command and control data link.
ACAS XU is specifically designed to be interoperable and backwards compatible with Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) II, which is the worldwide collision avoidance system used on most commercial transport aircraft.
GA-ASI is currently working with NASA to integrate the proof-of-concept SAA system aboard NASA's Predator B, called Ikhana. Ikhana will serve as the primary test aircraft in a SAA flight test scheduled to take place this month and next at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, Calif.
The flight test campaign will evaluate the SAA system in a wide variety of both collision avoidance and self-separation encounters and will include a sensor fusion algorithm being developed by Honeywell.
Meanwhile, DRR testing has been occurring at various locations across Southern California this year onboard a Beechcraft King Air in an attempt to detect and track multiple test aircraft across the full Field-of-Regard, including General Aviation aircraft beyond ten miles. The tests are the first in an extensive flight test campaign designed to develop the Engineering Development Model (EDM) DRR fully and make it ready for flight testing on Predator B.
The ultimate goal of GA-ASI's SAA program is to enable "due regard" operations in international airspace and routine access in non-segregated civilian airspace in the U.S. and around the world. The company's pioneering efforts commenced in 2011 and have included the successful demonstration and follow-on integration of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) onboard the Guardian RPA, the flight test of a SAA architecture and self-separation functionality on Predator B, and testing of a prototype DRR on a Twin Otter aircraft and Predator B.

The media went wacko over Lynne Plaskett's claim that an "alien" life force - specifically, a small flying saucer - cured her cancer 20 years ago.
She told her story Thursday morning on a taped installment of TV's syndicated "Maury Povich Show." Within an hour, the County Council member from New Smyrna Beach was bombarded by calls from radio, TV and newspaper reporters.
She thought she answered every question consistently and with sincerity.
"If you believe, no proof is necessary." Plaskett said. "If you don't, then no proof is sufficient."
But wide-eyed Volusia residents were left with some nagging questions:
o Did she REALLY have cancer?
o Why did she blurt this out so close to the November election?
o And didn't she say something on the Maury Povich Show" about writing a book? Could this be a big stunt to plug it?
Plaskett said she was diagnosed in 1975 with T cell lymphoma and given three months to live. From her Los Angeles hospital, she went home to bed and cried.
As she tells it, "I'm lying in bed, and I hear this electronic buzzing sound behind me like it's emanating from the wall. The room filled up with a fog-like smoke. I was levitated off my bed, and a disk-like object about 8 inches in diameter came in, hovered over me and passed three times down the length of my body but never touched me."
The next day, she didn't remember the encounter, but knew she'd be OK, Plaskett said. Within four days, her cancer had retreated drastically. Within four months, she was in remission.
She said she recalled the close encounter in 1981 while watching a TV program on UFOs. The program played an alleged tape recording of a "mother ship."
It was the same buzzing sound, and it triggered her memory.
Medical records released by Plaskett confirm she was diagnosed with cancer in April 1975. Tests found signs of widespread cancer in her throat, bone marrow and kidneys.
But after just two days of chemotherapy, "the patient had a very dramatic reduction in the tumor burden as seen by chest X-ray," according to records from Harbor General Hospital. Plaskett credits her alien encounter.
Dr. Walter Durkin, an Ormond Beach oncologist who in 1975 worked at the University of Southern California teaching hospital across town, isn't a believer.
"Back then, we had reasonably good treatment for lymphoma," Durkin said. Lymphomas are very chemotherapeutically sensitive."
Today, about 90 percent of lymphoma patients go into remission, and half are cured for good he said.
Would a four-day turnaround seem unusual to him?
"No, Not at all." he said.
Cancer patients given little time to live often don't know how to explain it if when they suddenly get better, Durkin said. They often fill that gap in their understanding with "recollections" of miracles or strange encounters.
"What she should be doing is encouraging people to get treatment because her doctor is the one who cured her," Durkin said.
But Plasket remains a believer. "I know I wasn't crazy, and I wasn't dreaming." she said.
"It's my time - and I think it's important that people know there are positive encounters, too." said Plaskett, who has produced only a few hand-written pages for a book. "I'm not ashamed of that. If it hurts my career, then so be it."
As her story was picked up by news wires, national radio broadcasters and other television programs fellow county councilmen said they still have confidence in her.
They described Plaskett as a level-headed expert on planning and zoning issues.
And no one will ever know for sure exactly what, if anything, Plaskett experienced in her Los Angeles area home 20 years ago.

Hi Brian: My wife and I were camping at Winagame Lake Provincial Park, near High Prairie, Alberta, about 430 km north-west of Edmonton, on Aug. 7, 2007. We enjoy star-gazing, especially away from city lights.
Between 11:30 pm -12:30 am we were watching from two different areas of the campground, observing a couple of satellites and a meteorite. When we returned to our campsite at 12:30 am we decided on one last look. Our campsite was well-treed, so our view was restricted. We were looking up when for some reason I glanced downwards to the top part of trees in front of us and noticed a bright light moving slowly on a direct path at a 45* angle through the trees. The size of the light was comparable to the nail of my small finger at arms length. There was a clearing beyond the tree line, but we couldn't tell if it was in that area or beyond. We watched the light for about 10 seconds and as it reached an open area it got smaller and faded out. It was definitely an exciting experience.
