Several Valley residents reported seeing strange red lights in the sky on Monday night and the cause of the lights remains a mystery.

Arizona Republic reporter Anne Ryman, who lives in Deer Valley, reported seeing four lights in a square shape that eventually became a triangular shape. The lights were moving to the east and they disappeared one by one. She said the lights were visible for about 13 minutes at about 8 p.m..

One north Phoenix resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said he saw four or five red lights lined up in a straight line and spaced apart evenly. The lights slowly moved east and became dimmer as the witness watched. He said the last light remained in the sky the longest. Then three jets came from the west and traveled in the direction of the red lights.

An official from Luke Air Force Base stated that they do not have any aircraft in the sky tonight and that the lights are not part of any Air Force activities.

Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said that air traffic controllers at Sky Harbor Airport also witnessed the lights, but they do not know the cause.

The incident is similar to the "Phoenix Lights" seen on March 13, 1997. Thousands of residents reported seeing a mile-wide, v-shaped formation of lights over the Valley. In that case the lights appeared about 7:30 p.m. and lasted until 10:30 p.m.

LIGHTS OVER PHOENIX: RESIDENT LAUNCHED BALLOONS WITH FLARES?

Steve Hammons April 22, 2008

PHOENIX - Late Tuesday, Phoenix TV station KNXV, ABC affiliate channel 15, is following up on a report that a resident of north Phoenix launched four helium balloons with flares attached.

According to the station's Web site, abc15.com, "ABC15's Jon DuPre talked to one north Phoenix man late Tuesday afternoon who said he watched his neighbor launch four helium balloons with flares attached to them right before the mysterious lights were spotted."

"He said he believed this could be the source of Monday night's sightings," the station reported. "ABC15 knocked on the door and talked to that neighbor, who then said he didn't launch the flares, and instead it was another neighbor several doors down."

According to other news reports, a Phoenix police helicopter pilot who saw the lights stated they looked like flares to him.

ARIZONANS WATCHING SKIES

At about 8 pm Monday night, dozens of residents called police and local media reporting four unusual bright red lights.

Local TV stations and The Arizona Republic newspaper carried the accounts along with several video clips of the lights. The Associated Press carried the reports today, reaching national and international audiences.

Phoenix residents claimed the lights seemed to move somewhat together, drifting slowly, then gradually fading out.

Witnesses quoted in the Phoenix media simply reported red lights, and made to observations of a solid craft.

This is in contrast to the March 13, 1997, incident when many witnesses stated they saw a huge V-shaped or triangular solid craft.

AVIATION OFFICIALS: SOURCE OF STRANGE RED LIGHTS UNKNOWN

The Arizona Republic

Civilian and military aviation organizations said Tuesday the source of the strange red lights spotted over Phoenix Monday night remained unknown. An official with the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which monitors the skies for security threats, said Tuesday the organization did not know where the lights came from.

Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said that though air traffic controllers at Sky Harbor Airport witnessed the lights, they do not know the cause. Nothing appeared on radar and Gregor said the FAA will not be investigating. "There's nothing to look into," Gregor said.

Several Valley residents reported seeing strange red lights in the sky on Monday night.

"Arizona Republic "reporter Anne Ryman, who lives in Deer Valley, reported seeing four lights in a square shape that eventually became a triangular shape. The lights were moving to the east and they disappeared one by one. She said the lights were visible for about 13 minutes at about 8 p.m..

The lights slowly moved east and became dimmer as the witness watched. He said the last light remained in the sky the longest. Then three jets came from the west and traveled in the direction of the red lights.

An official from Luke Air Force Base stated that they did not have any aircraft in the sky Monday night and that the lights were not part of any Air Force activities.

The Deer Valley airport officials said that the lights were not from any aircraft at that airport.

Several people reported seeing four lights forming various formations above the Valley Monday night.

Tony Toporek was talking with his neighbors in north Phoenix when the lights appeared at about 8 p.m.

He grabbed his video camera and started taping.

Witnesses reported that the lights formed a vertical line, then formed a diamond-shape, followed by a u-shape.

The lights reportedly moved from side to side and upward before disappearing one by one.

Toporek said the last light vanished and then briefly reappeared before disappearing again.

ABC15 contacted several agencies Monday night, including the FAA, Sky Harbor, Luke Air Force Base, and the Phoenix Police Department. No one could explain what the lights are.
