"Skeptic Radford says he's solved the mystery of the chupacabra; I posted about this on my blog Animal Forteana. After that big news hit the Fortean-Cyrptid World, Radford announced he's offering a reward for anyone who can show proof of earlier accounts of chupie sightings. Here's what I posted about both items on Animal Forteana:"
About fifteen years ago, I was working on my final folklore project in graduate school, focusing on cataloging the ways animals appear in paranormal, UFO, and Fortean narratives. Sometimes animals appeared as mundane entities as "witnesses", other times, the animals were themselves supernatural or "others." Here's a small bit about the Chupacabra from the paper, tentatively titled "My Alien Lizard Lover: Animal Motifs in UFO and Fortean Narratives:"
The Chupacabra (goat sucker) is the creature of legend unto itself. Described as three to four feet tall, with large, "wrap around eyes (not unlike the eyes of the gray aliens) with a spiny ridge on its back, the Chupacabras has been a part of of lore in the Latino community for a few years, originating from Puerto Rico, which has folkloric traditions of vampire type creatures who attack animal and humans alike. Chupacabra punctures its victims; rabbits, goats, chickens, and other small creatures, in the neck, draining the victim of all blood. Recently the stories have included attacks on humans. In the past two or three years, stories of Chupacabras have made their into Latino ethnic beliefs in the United States, as well as crossing over into non-Latino (Anglo, etc.) groups. Cooper's "Dictionary of Symbolic and Mythologic Animals "gives this definition this definition of the goat sucker birds:An evil and ill omened nocturnal, and therefore allied to the powers of darkness: said to drain milk from cows and goats.. Goatsuckers can embody the souls of people unable to account for crimes committed while in human form; their cries are said to be the wailing of the ghost expiating the sins." (Cooper; 1992: 114) Cooper does not give any cultural reference for this however. But the parallels to the term Chupacabras and the concept of a creature draining an animal of fluid, as well as its avenging nature, are obvious.
Many personal experience narratives combine the presence of Chupacabras with UFOs and extraterrestrials. "A lot of Mexicans believe in extra extraterrestrials, so that's what they think they are (Arizona Daily Star, Sunday, May 11, 1996) "Others think the Goat Sucker may have come from outer space of is the mutant progeny of some mad gene-splicing scheme." (Dudley Althaus, Register-Guard, May 14, 1996)
Tensions within the narratives of Chupacabra include the fear expressed by telling these stories, and the satiric songs and cartoons that have become an industry.
Elizabeth Casals, in her article "Chupacabra Weekend (UFO Magazine) writes of her search for personal narratives in Mexico about the Chupacabras. No one would admit that they believed such lore, but Casals did find "souvenir stalls, their shelves pile high with plaster piggy bans and cowhide wallets. And racks of T-shirts. Several styles of Chupacabras shirts caught my eye: particularly the one that read "Beware - the Chupacabra will get you." (Casals, 1996:30) Obviously tourism is good for the Chupacabras business, whether or not the lore is believed by locals. She did find a woodcarver who had carved an image of the Chupacabra.
People within this tradtion are usually reluctant to talk about the Chupacabras and are afraid of being ridiculed. A superstitious belief that they will invite the Chupacabras into their lives by discussing the creature may be the motivation for keeping silent on the Chupacabras, particularly towards outsiders. Yet, as happens so often in folklore, there are contradictions. Humor,, satric songs, and cartoonish images often the fear an and unease about the unknown. The Chupacabra is an unknown, and is believed to be causing damage to people's pets as well as humans. By creating a story that this Chupacabra is, indeed a creature, and, that the creature is a "pet" of the aliens, some order has been made out of he chaos of harmful, unexplained vents. The Chupacabra has been given a place and a definition.The paper is over sixteen years old, and of course, I was writing within the context of approved-by-academia and the confines of my subject area, folklore. (I also notice in looking this over that a lot is lacking as to citations, style, and so on. ) Which, as I commented on the C-Influcence blog, required a particular mind-set regarding one's philosophical treatment of paranormal-UFO events:
I loved the academic realm of folklore as a discipline, but, had a few major problems with it at the same time. I am not an academic, and, when in college, decided to not follow that path. I'm simply not wired that way; can't deal with authorities, politics, 9 to 5 job milieu... but that aside, I found a huge problem in folklore studies -- as an academic pursuit - that seemed ironically contradictory. On the one hand, collecting stories while remaining nonjudgmental was encouraged. At the same time, it seemed to me folklore couldn't decide what it wanted to be. Professors wanted conclusions, they wanted a psychological analysis. Well, I'd say, I'm not a psychologist, I'm not a psychology student, I'm not even taking any psychology classes. While I could give a sort of every-woman's, educated take on, say, UFO narratives using psychology (Jung, etc.) it wouldn't really be worth much. If not psychology, sociology, if not that, science, they wanted something. Pointing out that folklore, while utilizing those areas in some ways, is not those things, -- well, we just went around. To the above, I will add that the aknowledgement of these things as possible, let alone real, was simply not an option.
At the time, Chupacabras was big news in both the marginalized and fringe cultures of paranormal studies, as well as the mainstream news. Usual explanations from the latter group for Chupacabras included "cultural or sociological anxiety", good old superstitions, and a sudden misunderstanding of predators and their affects on domestic and livestock, ranch and farm animals. As these stories do, Chupacabra faded away a bit, and for reasons I haven't yet figured out, morphed into a new kind of Chupacabra: the canine type animal reported as a Chupacabra reported throughout the United States.
Skeptic Benjamin Radford, in his recent and supposed solving of the chupacabras mystery, writes that one of the early Chupacabra witnesses, Madelyne Tolentino, had seen the movie "Species" a few weeks before her sighting of the Chupacabras, which Radford found "suspicious.":
"To me, that was the smoking gun," he said. "It can't be a coincidence that this Chupacabra that's now popping up around the world just happens to look exactly like the monster in this sci-fi film. As usual with the kinder, gentler skeptic, the new tactic is not to accuse the witness of being mentally ill or a liar, just... "confused.":
"But Radford said he doesn't think Tolentino is a liar or hoaxer, just that she confused something she saw in a movie with something she saw in real life. "There "are" similarities; but there are also differences. Like breasts, numerous tendrils upon the head, and the height of the entity, which is quite tall.
This same explanation -- of imagined creatures from an entertainment venue -- was offered by skeptics when Barney and Betty Hill described their encounters. An Outer Limits episode: The Bellero Shield aired on February 10th, 1964, a couple of weeks before the HIlls experienced their UFO sighting and abduction. Again, there are similarities to the aliens in the television episode, but differences as well, including height. Contrast the Outer Limits creature with drawings of what the Hills saw made by both the Hills and other artists. Googling or otherwise searching out these images, and comparing and contrasting them for yourself will reveal that there are as many differences as there are similairites. I'm not attempting to thoroughly analyze the merits of either case; but the point is, imagery within popular culture is often used to "explain" mysterious encounters. It's silly to state images don't influence us on many levels, every day, far more than we know. That is a whole other topic. At the same time, to throw about images from movies and television and use them to "solve" mysteries is just too simplistic.
I find it ironic that images and symbols are influencing us -- speaking to us
every moment of every day and often in insidious and spooky ways, manipulated by the powers that be, and yet we remain ignorant of all "that". At best, if we notice it at all, we label it "conspiracy theory" and move on. But the skeptics, and not a few UFO researchers, are quick to point to images as the cause for what's perceived during paranormal or UFO encounters. This easy explanation takes care of everything in one fits all theory, and we no longer have to deal with the pesky supernatural, Fortean or UFO event.

Ms. Casals search was doomed to fail from the start. There is no "Chupacabras lore" in Mexico - the phenomenon kicked off in May 1996 in Veracruz. However, there is a certain amount of background information (and a long history of mutilations) in Puerto Rico, although those early waves of the 1950s and mid-1970s never featured a visible protagonist.
Not content to have "solved" the Chupacabra mystery, Radford is now looking for witness accounts prior to the 1990s. Article begins:
As reported here on Discovery News and elsewhere, the origin of the mysterious vampire beast el chupacabra can be traced back to an eyewitness who saw the 1995 film Species, which featured an identical monster.
As I commented in my previous post no it can't, and no it doesn't.
But, Radford, one of the new, improved, benign forms of skeptics, (who, like Joe Nickel, present themselves as "paranormal investigators" not skeptics) offers a reward for anyone providing proof of earlier sightings:
I'll offer a public 250 reward (plus a signed copy of my book Tracking the Chupacabra) for the first verifiable written evidence of a blood-sucking monster called the chupacabra (or chupacabras) that dates before 1990. It must be a published, dated reference; I can be contacted via Discovery News.
Well, at least he hasn't offered up the owl as an explanation for the mystery.

Spooky footage claims to have captured the ghost of a long-dead Lord Mayor communicating with paranormal investigators.
Experts caught the eerie interactions on camera during a guided tour of the Liverpool Medical Institute, which is renowned for its apparently unexplained sightings.
The team from Sefton Paranormal Investigators claimed to have noticed several elements of what they believe to be spiritual activity as they watched the footage back after the tour last month.

The Liverpool Medical Institute, which opened in 1837, is one of the oldest medical societies in the world.
There have been previous claims of ghostly sightings on the main staircase, the library and the Victorian lecture theatre
And the team, made up of four investigators and 17 members of the public, claim to have made contact with Richard Caton, the Lord Mayor of Liverpool from 1907-1908 - who died in 1926.
Their investigation began by identifying areas within the 19th century Grade II-listed building as potential hotspots for activity.
Pamela Robinette, from Sefton Paranormal Investigators, said: 'As a rule of thumb, we always begin by simply asking if there are any spirits that wish to communicate with us.
'When we reached the medical library we set up electro-magnetic field sensors, known as rempods, on the outer side of the room.

Another part of the footage claims to show a ghostly orb at the foot of the main staircase, where others are said to have seen ghostly figures of a man and his dog.The light anomaly seems to appear out of thin air before crossing the path of the group and disappearing again.
A member of the team walks straight past the orb and appears not to notice it. Ms Robinette claimed that the orb was too bright and intense to be dust, and that if it had been an insect there would have been a specific flight path and shape.

The mere fact that there is extraterrestrial intelligence out there would raise a series of troubling questions: exactly where are they? Do they have the ability to get here? Are they already in the neighborhood? Once again, proximity becomes a major issue.
Even an ambiguous signal raises the need for a unified, United Nations led effort to provide a framework for response. Developing a diplomatic framework, even before we know what we might be dealing with, actually makes sense. Having a framework in place means that you have thought through the possibilities and you can respond much quicker to challenges when the need arises. Developing a working relationship between scientists, politicians and diplomats would be important in such a scenario. Groups like the SETI Institute could provide the knowledge and background to help lead United Nations officials in developing a planet-wide response.
The trouble may be far off or may even be something we never confront. It may not even be trouble at all, simply pleasant space aliens with whom we conduct a decades-long conversation across light years of space. Considerations of our defense and safety are still a cautious and practical reaction in the wake of an ambiguous First Contact. It certainly shouldn't be a panic driven rush to put nuclear weapons in space. It could simply be a series of what-ifs leading us to consider making some long-term changes to make us safer. Perhaps just monitoring our solar system for evidence of visitors? Or a manned observation system in Earth orbit?
The SETI Institute and the United Nations should begin the basic discussions now. It can be an informal and zero-dollar conversation to start. And perhaps it is already occurring and I'm just out of the loop. I know that United Nations officials, such as Mazlan Othman, the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, have attended scientific conferences that have involved SETI researchers and astrophysicists. I hope they have had an opportunity to sit down over coffee, at the very least, to have a reasonable discussion. It could grow into a volunteer task force that reports to COPUOS (the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space). Developing a working relationship now would be quite advantageous if First Contact ever does occur. But please, let's keep it quiet. Start talking about UFOs and one of two things generally happen: People scoff, or they talk about the weird thing they saw in the sky that time.
Sometimes they do both.
Jim Dilettoso is really interested in those stories. For nearly 30 years, he has made a sideline of looking at the photos and video that sometimes accompanies these stories to pick out the fake ones, so people can wonder about the rest.
"I find some fakes, but good fakes are hard to do," said Dilettoso, who splits his time between Graham and Arizona.
You won't learn that much about how he authenticates photos here.
A lot of his explanations of pixels, spectrum analysis and lines per frame mean next to nothing to a small-town reporter who spends a lot of time at city council meetings. A lot of it has to do with how to tell the size of an object by the amount of light reflected from its surface and its relationship to other objects in the frame.
Once he can say the picture has not been altered, it gets relatively simple. Dilettoso says he has a database made up of images of things seen in the sky from airplanes to meteorites. He compares those images to the ones in the photos. If he gets a match, then the photo is explained.
"If I don't get a match, it's an unknown," Dilettoso said. "It's not an alien spacecraft, it's an unknown."

But not jumping to conclusions does not mean Dilettoso does not believe in strange things in the sky or even extraterrestrial visitors. He saw something in the sky once himself on Aug. 17, 1979, while traveling with fellow investigator Wendell Stevens on a rural road in California.
"I saw a huge illuminated boomerang and I thought it was the end of the world," Dilettoso said. "I thought everybody in the world must be seeing this it was so big and so bright."
Dilettoso said he could see it in the air for about 10 minutes and then it stood on its end in the air and shot straight up into the sky. He was so overwhelmed, so sure this was doomsday, he didn't even get the two cameras out of the car to take a picture.
"I didn't think there would be a photo shop open tomorrow," he said.
In the late 1970s, Dilettoso says he was producing tours for rock bands. He had a background in film and when the Moody Blues tour he was running wrapped up for the winter, two men named Jim Lorenzen and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Wendell Stevens, both well-known UFO researchers, contacted him about testing some pictures.
He had a background in computers and video, too, very cutting-edge stuff in the late 1970s, and he started spending his winters looking at pictures of things in the sky.
Not everyone is impressed with Dilettoso's methods. Put his name into an Internet search engine and see a comprehensive list of the ways one human being can impeach the character of another. It's not skeptics attacking him for the most part; it's other UFO researchers.
"A lot of the UFO research community is really vicious toward each other," Dilettoso said. "If MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) says 'this looks good' another group will come in and dump on it."
He does have friends in the field - a lot of them. Peter Davenport, who runs the National UFO Reporting Center in Davenport, Wash., says Dilettoso does great work. He especially praised Dilettoso's work looking at pictures of a 1997 UFO sighting in Phoenix, Ariz.
A lot of people apparently saw it and CNN reported on it several months after the fact. There is an account, amateur video and still of a virtual reality model of the incident Dilettoso worked on at edition.cnn.com/US/9706/19/ufo.lights/.
Dilettoso says there are patterns to sightings. For example, he says, every five or six years there will be a reported sighting of an egg-shaped object. One was reported in Graham in 2001.
A few months after that, there will be a report of a cigar or boomerang-shaped object in the same state or region and a few months after that, there will be a report of a cluster of lights not far away.
Something like that was also seen in Graham in 1961. It was not reported until 2003.
Reports come from all across the United States, according to a monthly report of UFO sightings from MUFON, which is about the biggest and best-known of the many UFO research organizations in the country. But the vast majority of reported sightings are in the United States.
In MUFON's January monthly report, for example, out of 606 reported sightings, 556 were in the United States, 15 were in Canada, six in the United Kingdom and 29 other reported sightings spread across 18 countries.
Within the United States, Texas led other states in reported sightings with 159, some of which made the news. North Carolina had 12 sightings reported.
Dilettoso says that in his conversations with Davenport he has learned there are reports from every county in North Carolina, although there seems to be a blackout over Fayetteville with its huge military bases.
Dilettoso said it could be that Americans want to report these things and have organizations and a relatively trusted government to report them to.
"Large numbers of unidentified objects could be flying around the Ukraine and there's nobody to report them to," Dilettoso said.
California, Dilettoso said, has the largest number of UFO investigators and the largest population and came in second in the January report with 75 reported sightings.
Dilettoso found four reports filed from Alamance County since 1998, one of which the Times-News reported in November, 2003.
" people across the county were talking up the big boom that rattled windows and woke up even sound sleepers. At church and over lunch, people described jumping out of bed and looking out the window, expecting a hole in their roof or a blazing fire at the neighbor's house."
The Times-News never got a good explanation for what caused that boom or booms. The paper went so far as to file a freedom of information act request. The Navy wrote a letter saying there were no military planes in the area and commercial planes don't go that fast, so this is indeed unidentified.
It does not take much reading about UFO investigations to hit talk of government conspiracy. In some cases, the government is accused of working with aliens or some Zionist conspiracy in some of the more extreme theories.
Dilettoso says he has never run into government interference.
"In all the work I've done, I've never had someone come to me and say, 'You better cut that out or we're going to kill you,' " Dilettoso said. "I wish they would; it would make me feel like some of what I've done had some meaning."
While Dilettoso does not seem to jump to conclusions in his investigations, he does have beliefs.
"Aliens are looking at us because we're more advanced with our free will and spirituality."
ACCOUNTS OF AREA REPORTS
These are UFO reports files with the National UFO Reporting Center. Director Peter Davenport says he does not give out the names of the people who report sightings.

I did the same with almost the exactly same time and weather conditions today. I have now obtained digital photographs of same type of objects taken today 01/10/01. One photograph even shows northeasterly commercial jet traffic to verify size (small) of objects and direction of travel.
If this is some natural phenomenon, I would like it explained. I will have to get my daughter to download and send as soon as possible. I do not know how to download these pictures. Thank goodness for computer generation kids.
In the picture containing the commercial jet, there was no interference between the object and the jet and the object appeared to be much higher than the jet. (estimated at 30,000 feet) This occurrence has been very questioning to me.
I have over 4,000 hours as a private pilot and I have never witnessed anything of this nature."

I knew that what I saw was not a weather balloon, due to the fact that my father, a small aircraft pilot, had taken me numerous times to the local airport to view weather balloon launches, and I was very familiar with all that weather balloons involve, both visually and mechanically.
While watching this object for about 30 seconds, I felt that I was not intended to see it, and I made what I felt was a conscious decision to never discuss what I had seen. I noticed the object ascending from the East, and I watched it with apprehension until the vehicle in which I was riding turned a corner and went down a hill toward my home, and my view was blocked by landscape and trees.
When I first noticed the silver circle, it was about 20 degrees above the visible horizon, when I lost sight of it 30 seconds later, it was in what I would consider the 11 a.m. position, but not overhead, still east of me. To the east of my sighting location there was no developments, airports, cities, etc. - just rural area. The object seemed to be very close in proximity and relatively the size of a full moon, and metallic - silver in color. Twenty-seven years later, I can still visualize and feel exactly what I witnessed in 1971, and I still have an eerie feeling when I think about it, which is mostly all the time."

The light was a flat-type with no projection. Perhaps the strangest thing I noticed, in addition to the whole scenario, was the absence of any sound. I didn't see any structure around the lights but they were in a triangular/delta pattern. I watched it until it disappeared, then went into the house and called my boyfriend who lived 1 to 2 miles away in the direction that the UFO was traveling. He looked out but saw nothing. For a day or two, I watched the newspaper for any other reported sightings, but saw none. All I can say is, I know what I saw and I don't care if anybody believes me or not."

David Rudiak, commenting recently at Kevin Randle's blog about the iconic Kenneth Arnold sighting of 1947 (and others), wrote that common sense and logic would bring one to the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH) as the answer to the UFO mystery.
And he was correct, of course.
Studying UFO reports after our perspective of seeing aeronautical displays of heavier-than-air constructs since 1914, and ballooning 200 years before that, one can readily see that UFO sightings and maneuvers of those UFOs sighted duplicate what we have all seen aerially.
Stunt flying, military maneuvers, and just plain flying have all been duplicated or improved upon by UFOs in the air.
However...
Reviewing ancient UFO-like observations and those before the modern era, one notes how bizarre those observations are, even though most seem to have been diligently documented.
The Vallee/Aubeck book, WONDERS IN THE SKY, is a superb resource for my point.
Those making the observations or hearing about them, not having the aeronautical experiences we have had, placed what they saw into a mystical, mythological, or religious context.
While those early on UFO-like sightings sometimes reflected advanced flying machines, they mostly depicted something stranger, much stranger.
But for the sake of Mr. Rudiak's argument, let's assume they represent indications of extraterrestrial flights, just like the ones he sees in the modern accounts.
Since we're dealing with thousands and thousands of such sightings over the millennia, and as many in the modern era, This would mean the alien civilizations or cultures are either free of economic issues and/or time derivatives: they are able to come and go without worry of cost or distance traveled.
(I've noted here and at our other blogs that it seems strange such visitors would spend so much time here, at the Earth, when there are so many more interesting elements in the Universe through which they travel.)
And because of the recorded diversity of the "objects" and "beings" sighted, one has to assume that more than one - many actually - alien /extraterrestrial culture or race is involved.
Mr. Rudiak's ET hypothesis is sane and sensible, in its way. But the hypothesis has to treat the issues of how such visitations can be funded or why they continue unabated, without regard for those beings flying them.
If they are robot controlled, what's the mechanism by which those robots have been produced.
That is, from where does the technology derive? How is it produced? In what economic milieu?
Yes, UFOs may be caused by extraterrestrials, but there's much more to the ETH that needs clarification.
