Incredibly, this is not the first time the Ural mountains have been associated with mysterious beams of light and the death or disappearance of a witness. It has, in fact, happened to nine other people, all dead. In February of 1959, something happened to nine skiers who were found dead in the snow in the Ural Mountains of Russia. Their tent had been torn open from the inside.
Clearly the nine experienced mountaineers had fled from their tent in a rush of terror. Most of them died of exposure, but strangely one had his tongue removed, and another had his head smashed by an unknown force. The Soviet government classified the case Top Secret and concluded that the murders were carried out by some "mysterious unknown force." Interestingly, witnesses from far away described lights in the sky that night over the Dyatlov camp very similar to the lights described by Lisa's travel companions during their chase. Local Ufologists have been working with the police on this case along with psychic investigators, but it's unknown if the events of Dyatlov Pass have been considered a connection.
Ufologists do, however, say the incident described by the boys coincides directly with the phenomena of alien abduction. The Ural mountain range has been the subject of intense scrutiny by several local and international investigators for years.
The nearby Kholat Syakhyl, or 'Mountain of the Dead' was important in the folklore of the local indigenous people who tell the story of the deaths of nine Mansi on it. A fatal plane crash in 1991 also claimed nine lives. Whether this number is a clue or simply a coincidence is unknown. The boys for the most part are considered innocent, although their mysterious story certainly raises several questions.
What could have really happened to the four of them? So far no talk of regression hypnosis has been reported to any Western media, but with the number of Ufologists taking interest in the story, it will no doubt be requested in the future. If it was a UFO incident, it wouldn't be the first time an alien craft reportedly took someone on board for several days or even weeks. In the White Mountains in Northeastern Arizona, a man was mysteriously taken aboard a craft and away from his friends while traveling home from a logging expedition.
Travis Walton was taken away for several days, spurring several to suspect foul play on the part of the loggers. Then, just as mysteriously as he had vanished Walton returned with an incredible story that was later turned into a book and a motion picture.
What is it about the mysterious Ural mountains that causes so many strange sightings and even deaths? We may never know. All we can hope for is the safe return of Lisa if she's still out there somewhere. In the mean time, more attention will certainly be given to the Ural mountain range as the reports keep pouring in.

THE UFO PLAYED WITH PILOTS
AJ: For how long did they try to intercept the UFO in that second attempt?
CAS: Just for a few minutes, because it vanished when the pilots tried to approach. Strangely enough, the object always returned to the same spot after our aircraft moved away - as if it were playing with our crewmen. There was a moment when the UFO was surrounding the dam and our pilots tried to reach it with a fast maneuver - one with a 30 or 40-second response.
AJ: Then what happened?
CAS: When the object noticed the maneuver it moved away to the West at a high speed.
AJ: What happened to the pilots after such an experience?
CAS: Due to the stress they cancelled their training and returned to the Durazno Air Base (FAU's most important site, located in the middle of the country). By getting there they reported the event to the officials. At the same time they learned that Montevideo had been hit by a blackout. It lasted for a few minutes and affected the whole city. It was due to the overheating of a power line which came from the exact spot where the UFO was seen over the dam. I should add that the Durazno base is where pilot trainings are mostly held. There are many different aircraft stationed there.
AJ: Did Cridovni consider one fact against the other? That is, did you associate the UFO over the dam with the blackout in Montevideo?
CAS: Yes. We believed the object must have affected the power line in some way causing the overheating. This is a supposition based on technical data provided by the power company itself (Usinas y Trasmisiones El'ectricas - UTE). Their technicians detected an overheating in some transformers in the line that supplies the capital city. We suppose this might be a result of that incident. After all, there must be a reason why it was over the dam. It must have been doing something there. What it was we don't know. Security guards and employees also witnessed the object flight around the dam that night. The object was seen from the ground and from the air. This leaves no doubt about its materiality.
AJ: Did you talk with the Pucara pilots? How was their emotional?
CAS: They were quite surprised with what they had seen. I personally interviewed the four of them, one by one, pursuant to our protocol for investigation. All narratives were coincident regarding the shape and maneuvers of the object. Our crewmen were affected by what they experienced.
AJ: Do they still work in the Air Force?
CAS: Only one of them remains in the Air Force.
A PROTOCOL FOR INTERCEPTION
AJ:Would you like to have been in their feet? What would have been your reaction if you were in one of those Pucara?
CAS: I would love to have been there (laughing), but I think my reaction would also be one of total surprise. Actually, I don't know what I would do at the time. One never knows. The aircraft involved were twoturboprop-engined fighters. There could have been some kind of hostility between the parties. However, in such situation the pilot must ask for permission before taking any action such as to fire a missile. There is a protocol for that in our country. According to Uruguayan law, we can't fire at an aircraft unless under presidential orders or in a real combat situation. A pilot might think about doing something, but will be subjected to superior orders and to the protocol for interception of unknown vehicles.
AJ: Besides this case involving the military is there any other involving civilians but equally intriguing? Could you describe it?
CAS: Yes. There is a case involving an Air Force aircraft which was being used to transport civilians around the continent. It was also operated by civilians. They were flying between Asuncion, in Paraguay, and Montevideo. It happened in 1979 and was investigated. The aircraft was already in Uruguayan air space when a luminous ball started to follow it. The object was beside the aircraft during the remaining trajectory until the capital city. When the crew saw the object, they asked the control tower whether another aircraft might be without communication causing that phenomenon to happen. They thought it might be an aircraft the tower hadn't spotted. The answer was that there were no other aircraft of such characteristics around there.
AJ: What happened next? What was the pilot's response?
CAS: All crew and passengers saw the object and were not happy to have an UFO right next to them. They were especially concerned about their flight safety. The pilot wanted to see if the object would respond to any signal so he turned on the landing lights, which are quite powerful. At that moment, the UFO which was nearly 700m away came closer to the left wing. The crew was even more scared and a strange odor of burned plastic was felt. Something like burning bakelite - a material which makes the aircraft control panel. Then the pilot turned off the lights and the object reacted moving away. We could say that such objects react to the light somehow.
AJ: How long did that last? Was there any harm to the aircraft equipment?
CAS: No. It was very brief, maybe one or two minutes. It was for a short time, because when the UFO came closer to the aircraft everybody felt the smell of burned plastic so the pilot turned off the landing lights which seemed to have attracted the object closer. There was no smoke in the cabin, only the smell of burned plastic. That was enough to generate fear of fire in the aircraft's controls. The smell went out though the ventilation system and the object moved away.
AJ: Did you interview the crew and pilots?
CAS: No. That time I was not in the Committee. I came 10 years after that, in 1989. However, I checked all details about how the passenger saw the object. For example, one of them even had a camera. The pilot was informed and asked the passenger to take pictures. Meanwhile, all passengers were looking at the object and the captain was trying to avoid panic. When they were near Montevideo asking for permission to land the object was not so close anymore. The aircraft descended slowly through the clouds and the object was seen again during the landing procedures, but it was very distant. When everyone left the plane, witnesses were interviewed and the photo negatives were collected by the authorities.
AJ: What happened to those pictures? Were they analyzed?
CAS: They were analyzed and we have an interesting report. The findings are a little subjective. Specialists say the image in the picture was the result of a powerful light source. The pilots were also surprised to see an object at such a high altitude. That made them reject the possibility of common luminous phenomena such as plasma, emissions from power lines or even meteorological plasma. It is very difficult to reach that altitude and respond to the aircraft lights as the object did. The UFO was not simply hovering. It was following the aircraft at a certain speed. This is one of the unconventional cases we found disclosed at the Committee
files.
AJ: How about cases involving ordinary people who called you to report a sighting? Which was most surprising?
CAS: There are many cases we could talk about. Some are old others are more recent, but all of them are very interesting. For example, once a family was in a resort in the state of Tacuaremb'o. They were all watching TV before going to bed when they noticed some interference in their TV. Initially they thought it could be the wind turning the antenna outside. So one of them went out and looked above. He saw the antenna was ok, but there was a luminous object over the house.
ALL HIDING INSIDE HOME
AJ: What happened next? Was it the UFO causing the interference in their TV?
CAS: Apparently, yes. When all went outside they witnessed the object moving towards a field where it displayed different maneuvers. It was a red object which moved very fast at a low altitude. Then the family got scared and runned back inside home, but the father and sons remained at the window watching the show. The UFO drew near the house, coming and going, until it went over the building. There was a loud noise and the antenna fell to the ground. Obviously, the object crashed against the antenna causing it to fall.
AJ: Maybe those were unskilled pilots...
CAS: Yes. Unskilled (laughing). Besides the noise from the antenna there was only a light and a coming and going buzz outside the house. The father then took a gun in order to defend his family, but the lights in the house didn't take long to shut down. The house was powered by a nearby mill. They all remained entrenched inside the house watching the dancing light through the window. They saw it again over the field a bit far away. It continued to move from one side to another until it disappears. No one could sleep that night.
AJ: Was there any relevant physical evidence or marks the object might have left over the field?
CAS: The next day when the family went out with the farm workers to check the place they found burned spots on the ground and other strange things. The most surprising fact was a burned stone. There was a large circular mark on the grass which also reached a stone. Well, we need a significant level of heat in order to burn a stone. That should be a source capable of generating five or six thousand degrees. However, this would burn the grass completely, which was only slightly burned. How do we explain that?
AJ: Was there any explanation from experts?
CAS: Some civilian ufology groups also looked into this case and provided us with some information. It was a very interesting research and the case remains opened because we could never scientifically determine what caused those effects. The burning marks remained there for many years as observed by many members of our group. It happened almost 30 years ago, but it was very significant in a moment when the Committee had just started its works.
AJ: This is one of those classic cases in world's Ufology. They can happen in Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, France, USA, and so on. They are undeniable. What is Cridovni's position towards these cases? What had the witness seen? Was it a ship from outer space?
CAS: This is what frustrates us, because we don't know what they are. At the same time, we could not guarantee they have a terrestrial origin or that they are physical phenomena. In fact, for the cases I've just mentioned we could not find a conventional or scientific explanation. We could argue that they were some kind of gas in a round accumulation and that they could go up into the sky and even follow an aircraft. However, these are not reasonable explanations or something accepted by Physics.
AJ: So we could say these are material vehicles built with technology unavailable on Earth? In other words, could we say they are alien ships?
CAS: Well, what happened to that family in Tacuaremb'o happened again in different places? This is a typical sighting and there are many other cases involving solid artifacts such as classical flying saucers. In our files we have all kinds of cases you see in the "X-Files" series. It is true! We have no answer to them. We don't know if we are dealing with known physical phenomena or something else. There are curious theories to explain them such as the one presented by Project Hessdalen, from Norway, saying those are micro-black-holes formed at low altitudes in the atmosphere (See DVD Portal, code DVD-032, UFO video collection).
AJ: What if they are real extraterrestrial vehicles?
CAS: The Air Force does not discard any possibility. At the same time we don't have any evidence to support anything.
AJ: Isn't there a fear to label cases with an ultimate explanation?
CAS: Of course. We have no elements to help in determining the nature of these vehicles. We must say that these are very strange cases and we keep the door open to different hypothesis. There are some very common standards in everything we research. This is why we created the Regional Center for the Investigation of Aerospace and Terrestrial Phenomena (Crifat). This is a civilian institution also formed by people outside the Air Force. We found a pattern in these cases which are the same in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, etc. Yet we don't know what they mean. Therefore, it's good to keep in touch with investigation groups from different countries so that we can exchange information and maybe reach some conclusions we could not reach alone.

g IMAGINING - We've already discussed the notion that extraterrestrials probably aren't humanoids or even anthropoids. Considering that, there's doesn't seem much hope for the denizens of Taurus II in the Star Trek episode "The Galileo Seven" existing (see picture and background). But let's suppose such parallel evolution occurred. Would these creatures have arisen in the environment portrayed in the episode - a rocky terrain with low-lying fog? Probably not. Such a climate doesn't lend itself well to primate evolution, as anthropoids tend to live in trees and walk bipedal as the environment shifts to a savannah. Most likely the Taurans migrated to the clime, which is vaguely reminiscent of a Scottish shoreline near the North Sea. Most likely the Taurans are in a sort of "forbidden zone" as they use leather and wood despite the lack of plant life to support animals and the lack of trees. The Taurans probably spotted the shuttlecraft entering the atmosphere or coincidentally came across them while on a hunt. They almost certainly live in or beside a wooded area. A side note: The Taurans appear to have excellent hearing or sense of smell as they're able to aim with great accuracy while the shuttlecraft crew can't see the creatures.
g AFTERMATH - For the last million years or so, mankind's principal diplomatic interest has been to handle social intercourse on his own planet. Interaction with other worlds' societies was the province of science fiction. That soon may change. Modern science and technology suggest that a transmutation of past fiction to present reality could be imminent. If so, the dynamics of interaction will surely be far different than the alien encounters routinely portrayed in the cinema and on television. The ideas developed more than a century ago by European novelists such as Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, while imaginative, were not prescient. The aliens won't come here, and we won't go there. Our interaction will be a distant one, conducted by the electronic equivalent of very slow diplomatic pouch. See article.

In the last two years, there is an interesting trend emerging in UFO reports: UFOs appear to have an "organic" shape. There are only a few reports I could find so far. These reports are presented below, quoted from sources accessible on the Internet. It is difficult to know if there are other similar reports outside the Internet, but there is enough of them to see the emergence of a trend, as the phenomenological similarities between these reports are striking. From a parasociological standpoint, this new material represents useful empirical evidence, even though the reports are very short and clearly investigated from an ETH perspective.
JELLYFISHES, SQUIDS, AND AMOEBAS
The first report that I am aware of dates back to July 2003, where a man reported seeing two "jellyfish" shaped UFOs over the skies of Northamptonshire in the United Kingdom. This was reported in the Internet version of the local newspaper. Nothing particular came out of it.
Then, in November 2007, in Kent (again in the United Kingdom), several witnesses saw three objects having the shape of a jellyfish. The ufological website ufoinfo.com has a short report on this sighting. Although this sighting was recorded into an ufological website, ufologists did not appear to have pay much attention to it.
In January 2008, in the now famous Stephenville, Texas, a witness saw something looking like a jellyfish. This was recorded as part of the Stephenville UFO wave, but beyond that it does not appear that it attracted any special attention.
In October 2008, near the town of Empire in Ohio, a truck driver saw a very large UFO that he qualified of "organic":
"When I saw it, I was trying to take everything in and that's immediately what I thought when I saw it - that it was organic. That's the feeling that I got. I didn't think it could be anything else. It just came across as something organic."
A few days later, in the town of Midvale, Ohio, another witness had a very similar sighting that was qualified this time as looking like a giant amoeba. The conjunction of these two sightings attracted the attention of a few ufologists, particularly Steve Hammons who reported on them on the Internet.
Once again in the United Kingdom, an octopus-shaped UFO was sighted in Lincolnshire in January 2009. According to the witness, the sighting started with a ball of light:
"John Harrison, a resident of nearby Saltfleetby, said he looked out of his window on Saturday night to see "a massive ball of light," and "tentacles going right down to the ground" over the site. "It was huge" he said "At first I thought it must have been a hole where the moon was shining through but then I saw the tentacles - it looked just like an octopus."
This story acquired some momentum in the British and American press as the UFO was at first blamed for destroying a windmill turbine. However, it appears that if the witnesses saw the UFO in the same vicinity of the windmill turbine, they never saw the UFO touching the windmill turbine. This time, the organic UFOs "insisted" enough to be noticed.
Steve Hammons wrote another interesting article where he is asking if indeed there is a new trend emerging in the ufological scene, in a web article posted in February 2009.
PARASOCIOLOGICAL LOOK AT THE ORGANIC TREND
The limited interest shown so far by the ETH ufologists on this issue is not at all surprising. These UFOs sightings are challenging directly the technicist "nuts-and-bolts" fundamental assumption of ETH ufology. The mutation from flying saucers to other shapes, particularly the triangular one, could be accommodated by ETH ufologists, as we are still dealing with what appears to be manufactured crafts. But jellyfishes! This is more akin to crypto-exo-zoology! From a purely sociological perspective, it will be interesting to see how long they will continue to ignore them, and then how the ETH ufologists will integrate these sightings into their narrative (while protecting the "nuts-and-bolt" core storyline).
There is another sighting that needs to be mentioned here because it is likely to be ignored by ufologists, as it is most likely a fake. An octopus-shaped UFO was observed and filmed in Brazil in April 2009. The fake nature of this sighting should not lead us to ignore it, quite to the contrary.
From a parasociological standpoint, this is significant because a fake is used to imitate the new trend in UFO shapes. As Batcheldor (1984) and other parapsychologists have found, real psi effects are oftentimes accompanied with trickery, to unconsciously boost the belief in their reality so that the phenomena can continue to occur. This is a common practice among shamans (Heath 2004), and a key feature of the Trickster archetypical dimension of the paranormal, brilliantly described by Hansen (2001). It is not to say that the individuals who orchestrated the fake were consciously thinking along those lines. Instead, one should see this event as an illustration of the collective unconscious in action (i.e. taking a sociological standpoint rather than a psychological one). The fact that someone, somewhere, felt compelled to use new shared knowledge about UFO and to make it into a fake sighting, highlights that such shared knowledge resonates at an unconscious level too. The verification of this hypothesis can be done by the emergence elsewhere of other fakes taking the biological form of the new trend (which will truly make these sighting as social facts, as defined by the founder of sociology 'Emile Durkheim).
This new trend is also fascinating because it represents a gradual shift from the "nuts-and-bolt" UFOs, rather than a radical mutation. If we are to follow M'eheust's (1978) approach to the UFO phenomenon, then we should look in the recent past to see if the biological trend in the Sci Fi literature was significant. There is an interesting blog on this issue, which considers that "Science fiction isn't just about rocket ships and ray guns. Many science fiction books, movies and TV shows are based on the biological sciences. This blog discusses cloning, genetic engineering, mutant monsters, longevity treatments and all the other biology behind the fiction."
One can also think of Canadian David Cronenberg's films on the theme of horror-biological sci fi that he produced since the early 1970s. As well, there has been a number of books published on this issue, like Leonard Issacs' Darwin to double helix : the biological theme in science fiction, published in 1977 (London: Butterworths). Clearly, this is not a new issue, but how significant it is?
This is quite difficult to assess. Certainly, environmental issues are more prominent now than before, mostly because governments and large enterprises have now officially espoused the "green turn" in most Western countries. Is the "greening" of UFOs, by way of biological shapes, a sign of time? Are we entering a liminal zone where great advances in genetic engineering are now clearly on sight, but not yet a reality? And that the worries about their danger had time to "cook" since the early 1970s, thus translating into a hybrid high tech-organic shape, for which organic UFOs represent an ideal compromise? These are interesting questions and hypotheses to explore, but a more solid methodological framework to explore them is required.
Another issue to keep an eye on is whether the close encounter narrative will also mutate, as discussed in a previous post. Will the "aliens" coming from the organic UFOs be different from the "nuts-and-bolts" aliens? Historically, UFO sightings have preceded reports of close encounters by a few years. This appears logical as people and ETH ufologists' unconscious need some time to process the information at a deep mystical level. For that to happen, however, I think that a full-fledge organic UFO wave (i.e. many sightings over a limited geographical area over a few days or weeks, duly reported and ridiculed by the mainstream press) will be first required to get the ETH ufologists engaged in "nurturing" this aspect of the phenomenon.

Author and researcher STEVE QUAYLE riffed on a variety of topics such as giants, weather modification, secret aircraft, biblical prophecy, genetic engineering, the Illuminati agenda, and Planet X. The machinery to affect weather has gotten smaller and cheaper over the years, and there are currently 72 ionospheric heaters, in addition climate-controlling technology like Project HAARP, he outlined. Sightings of silent triangular-shaped craft are on the rise, and a battle in outer space is imminent, said Quayle, naming "extra-dimensionals" and black-ops as some of the participants.
The "super-soldier" program, Stargate technology, and CERN are involved in efforts to re-animate ancient giants, who were some 12-18 ft. height, he declared. "We are experiencing now the full implementation, in my opinion, of the Luciferian war on humanity. We talk about the New World Order, the Illuminati, the International League, but what is the prime directive of all those entities? It's the destruction of a five and half billion people," he cautioned.
Quayle reported his recent conversation with a "high ranking Goldman Sachs official" who'd visited one of the elite's underground cities that was being prepared. The official warned him that a "global flu" had already been determined, and a mandatory vaccination will be required, with those who refuse to take it being sent to FEMA camps. On the subject of Planet X, Quayle suggested that we're already seeing its effects throughout the solar system, and eventually, it will lead to a massive number of simultaneous active volcanoes on Earth.

Zecharia Sitchin (Azerbaijani: Zaxariya Sitcin) (July 11, 1920 -- October 9, 2010) was an Azerbaijani-born American author of books proposing an explanation for human origins involving ancient astronauts. Sitchin attributes the creation of the ancient Sumerian culture to the Anunnaki, which he states was a race of extraterrestrials from a planet beyond Neptune called Nibiru. He believed this hypothetical planet of Nibiru to be in an elongated, elliptical orbit in the Earth's own Solar System, asserting that Sumerian mythology reflects this view. Sitchin's books have sold millions of copies worldwide and have been translated into more than 25 languages.
According to Sitchin, Nibiru (called "the twelfth planet" because, Sitchin claimed, the Sumerians' gods-given conception of the Solar System counted all eight planets, plus Pluto, the Sun and the Moon) was the home of a technologically advanced human-like extraterrestrial race called the Anunnaki in Sumerian myth, who Sitchin states are called the Nephilim in Genesis. He wrote that they evolved after Nibiru entered the solar system and first arrived on Earth probably 450,000 years ago, looking for minerals, especially gold, which they found and mined in Africa. Sitchin states that these "gods" were the rank-and-file workers of the colonial expedition to Earth from planet Nibiru.
Sitchin wrote that Enki suggested that to relieve the Anunnaki, who had mutinied over their dissatisfaction with their working conditions, that primitive workers (Homo sapiens) be created by genetic engineering as slaves to replace them in the gold mines by crossing extraterrestrial genes with those of Homo erectus. According to Sitchin, ancient inscriptions report that the human civilization in Sumer, Mesopotamia, was set up under the guidance of these "gods", and human kingship was inaugurated to provide intermediaries between mankind and the Anunnaki (creating the "divine right of kings" doctrine). Humans have long dreamed of traveling to Mars, and several nations and private organizations are developing plans for crewed Mars missions in the coming decades. But a recent study looking at the risks for astronauts going to the moon, Mars, and other destinations, suggests some times will be safer than others for humans attempting the journey.
Nathan Schwadron, of the University of New Hampshire at Durham, and member of the DREAM2 team lead by Principal Investigator William Farrell, was the lead author on a paper focusing on the future of manned deep space exploration published in Space Weather, a journal of the American Geophysical Union. He and his team believe that radiation hazards during trips to the moon, Mars, or other destinations outside the protective shield of Earth's magnetic field remain one of the most daunting challenges to human exploration beyond low-Earth orbit.
The two main sources of radiation are the galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) from supernova explosions in the far-off corners of the galaxy that send galactic cosmic rays rocketing towards our solar system at nearly the speed of light, and the Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) emitted from our own Sun. Cosmic rays are the most energetic particles in the universe, and remain a significant and worsening factor that limits mission durations.
"The high energy of GCRs allows these particles to penetrate nearly every material known to man, including shielding on space craft; when the cosmic rays penetrate that shielding, secondary particles are produced that can damage organs and lead to cancer," said Schwadron.
Our Sun also erupts energetic matter from its surface, going through cyclical bursts of magnetic activity where it is more or less active. When the Sun is active, the frequency of eruptions increase, and the Sun's magnetic field intensifies. While this increases the likelihood of dangerous SEP events, the upside is that the magnetic field also deflects cosmic radiation away from the solar system, protecting astronauts from even more dangerous GCRs. Right now, the Sun is emerging from what many are calling the "mini-maximum", anticipated to be the smallest solar maximum that modern scientists have ever directly observed.
What Schwadron and his colleagues have found is that the solar activity has been decreasing over the last few solar cycles, and may likely continue to decrease in the next solar cycle. This means that astronauts may face higher levels of radiation than ever before. However, during Solar maximum, the GCR rate drops, and because the overall cycle-integrated solar activity is down, the overall likelihood of SEPs found during solar maximum is also reduced.
"It is a bit ironic, but the reduced GCRs in solar maximum and possibly fewer SEP events because of the trend of decreasing solar activity suggests that the next solar maximum may be one of the safest times to fly missions to deep space in the last 80 years,"said Schwadron.
NASA sets limits on how much cosmic radiation exposure is safe for astronauts, and is developing human health countermeasures to minimize the risks to crew members during space exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit. During periods of low solar activity, a 30-year-old astronaut can spend roughly one year in space-just enough time to get to Mars and back-before the constant bombardment by cosmic rays pushes the risk of radiation-induced cancer above current exposure limits.
This is truly a case where science is enabling exploration. "These radiation measurements are an important addition to our understanding of the fluctuating space radiation environment and potential radiation risks," said SSERVI Director Yvonne Pendleton. "This research is helping us prepare and plan for future human exploration."

NASA's Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) spacecraft orbiting the moon officially have begun their science collection phase. During the next 84 days, scientists will obtain a high-resolution map of the lunar gravitational field to learn about the moon's internal structure and composition in unprecedented detail. The data also will provide a better understanding of how Earth and other rocky planets in the solar system formed and evolved.
"THE INITIATION OF SCIENCE DATA COLLECTION IS A TIME WHEN THE TEAM LETS OUT A COLLECTIVE SIGH OF RELIEF BECAUSE WE ARE FINALLY DOING WHAT WE CAME TO DO," said Maria Zuber, principal investigator for the GRAIL mission at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. The GRAIL mission's twin, washing-machine-sized spacecraft, named Ebb and Flow, entered lunar orbit on New Year's Eve and New Years Day. GRAIL's science phase began yesterday at 8:15 p.m. EST (5:15 p.m. PST). During this mission phase, the spacecraft will transmit radio signals precisely defining the distance between them. As they fly over areas of greater and lesser gravity caused by visible features such as mountains, craters and masses hidden beneath the lunar surface, the distance between the two spacecraft will change slightly. Science activities are expected to conclude on May 29, after GRAIL maps the gravity field of the moon three times.

When I got home I checked a weather website to verify the cloud ceiling (2850m). I then roughly sketched what I saw and used digital calipers to estimate the altitude of the ball of light (approx 2600m). Based on the altitude and distance the ball of light traveled (approx 300m), I estimated the speed of climb at around 500kph (300mph). ETZOLD'S ARTICLE

This might indicate a complex interaction of a direct solar influence accompanied by interactions of the moon with the earth's magnetosphere during full moon." (p. 258).
Etzold article is about physical and astronomical parameters that could be enabling PK psi effects. I found it interesting because it relates to some analysis of UFO waves. The Swedish researcher Ragnar Foshufvud took UFO sighting data selected by Hynek and compared them to sunspot cycle data (see Foshufvud, Ragnar (1980). "Unidentified flying objects - A physical phenomenon". "Pursuit" 13(2)). He found that sightings increase at the beginning of the cycle when sunspots are getting to their maximum. A similar study by Claude Poher was able to correlate the rise of geomagnetic activity on Earth with increases in UFO sightings (see Poher, Claude and Jacques Vall'ee. (1975). "Basic patterns in UFO observations". Annual Conference of the "American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautic", Pasadena, California, 20-22 January). It is yet another indication, but not proof, that UFO sightings and PK effects seem to share similar patterns, and thus they might share fundamentally the same origin.
ORME-JOHNSON ET AL'S ARTICLE
Orme-Johnson and others' article looked at first interesting, as it represents a pragmatic approach as to how collective unconscious could be affected by reducing social stress in conflict areas. But their study is problematic in a number of ways. The authors' main thesis is that if a small number of people practice transcendental meditation (TM), social problems and conflict decrease. Then, the authors describe an experiment in Israel and Lebanon in the 1980s and think they found statistically valid correlations between TM and reductions in social conflicts. Although they never mentioned the concept of psi, it is certainly linkable to the Global Consciousness Project.
The problem is that it is a bunch of psychologists who really have no understanding of social sciences and social realities. They mention Jung and Durkheim's approach to collective consciousness (which is incorrect in the case of Jung, as he developed the concept of collective unconscious) to say that "such theories will not have a major influence on mainstream psychology until they are empirically testable". (p. 778). Yet, they are accepting without any critique TM, based on the Vedic religion. From an epistemological standpoint their argument is completely flawed. Sociological theories cannot be verified the same way as psychological ones because they are ontologically different. And, of course, their argument is asymmetric as they accept religiously based concepts (i.e., based on faith) while rejecting sociological arguments based on empirical research (even if such research is epistemologically different than what they are used to). Furthermore, their key concept of social coherence (i.e., less social conflict) is a prescriptive concept that sociologists have long rejected. Conflicts and violence are a normal part of human societies. As well, their approach is fundamentally reductionist "because the individual is seen as the unit of collective consciousness, restricted individual development can be identified as a fundamental source of collective stress as well" (p. 780). Sociologists have shown, long time ago, that a social fact like collective consciousness can only be understood if one looks at it as a social object (not as an aggregate of individual wills). But their greatest problem, in using their own perspective, is that there are a myriad of other social and political factors that would need to be controlled to be sure that TM has any effect on anything. And again, social and political factors can only be studied as social objects, not as aggregates of individual psychological issues. Finally, I think they use the wrong terminology when they introduce the notion of collective consciousness. If TM has any effect, it would be on the collective unconscious, as it is a phenomenon akin to psi effects.
Not a whole lot of useful information can be extracted out this article. However, it is a useful reminder that a psychological approach (i.e., using the individual as the fundamental unit of analysis) is not suited to tackle social objects. This, in turn, is also reminder that any linkage between parasociology and parapsychology will have to be carefully adapted to ensure effective epistemological and ontological correspondence or translation.
ROJCEWICZ'S ARTICLE
The article by Rojewicz is interesting as it shows that "Men in Black" (MIB) sightings could be construed as a paranormal phenomenon. The author shows that many of the usual traits of MIBs are similar to traits found in descriptions of meetings with the devil (black being the key color, the entity knows things about the witness that only he or she knows, unusual speech, come in group of three, strange walk, strange synchronistic events, etc.). This echoes Jacques Vall'ee's analysis of folkloric tales having similarities with the entities associated to UFOs in his book "Passport to Magonia".
What is more interesting is that the author rejects the all too common condescending attitude in folklore studies where "the scholar knows 'reality,' and what the informants know is 'folklore'." (p. 157). Rojewicz suggests that MIB could be a form of tulpa, an idea taken from the Tibetan mystical tradition, which he defines as "materialized thought-form". (p. 154). He cites the key book on this topic by Alexandra David-Neel, "Magic and Mystery in Tibet" (New York: Penguin, 1973). He also suggests that "MIB are materialized tulpoidal forms stabilized by collective fear-of 'Big Brother,' of terrorism and violence of hijacking, of all forms of personal intimidation." (p. 154). This is no proof, of course, but it is yet another indication that UFOs are more likely to be a psi phenomenon (of a collective rather individual nature) than something explainable through the ETH.
Lastly, Rojewicz offers some methodological piece of advice that I find useful. He cites David Hufford. (1977). "Humanoids and anomalous lights: Taxonomic and epistemological problems". "Fabula" 18: 234-241, stating that "believed accounts that look to repeating occurrence as their authority must be evaluated as to their objective nature before the question of their stability and distribution can be adequately be answered. There exists no good epistemological and ontological reasons to distinguish descriptions from explanations if the folklorist cannot seriously entertain the possibility that a real experience lies behind traditional belief." (pp. 157-158). In other words, the content of discourses about strange phenomena must be assessed first in looking in the actual events that were reported. Otherwise, it is not possible to make any inferences about the structure of what is essentially construed as a "rumour". However, implicit in this statement is that one does not need a unified materialistic explanation to understand folkloric traditions either (like the ETH). Folkloric traditions, like the ones about MIB and the devil, share many similarities pointing towards a common origin, but the content is not fully identical thus pointing also towards invalidating naive materialistic explanations (like the ETH).
