g STARS - What is the habitable zone for the nearby star Ross 248?
g ABODES - Astronomers have discovered the smallest yet observed extrasolar planet. The planet is only three times more massive than Earth, and has proven that low-mass stars may be good candidates for hosting Earth-like planets. See article.
g LIFE - Astrobiologists hope to find evidence for life on Mars. Sending spacecraft from Earth to study the planet could introduce biological contamination, however, and lead to a false detection of alien life. New research adds to these concerns with evidence that ATP - an energy-storage molecule vital to life on Earth - could survive for months or even years onboard a Martian probe. See article.
g MESSAGE - Maybe it's time to put some new numbers into the Drake Equation. See article.
g COSMICUS - Expanding its existing relationship with NASA, Google on Wednesday said it plans to lease 42.2 acres of unimproved land at the NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., to construct up to 1.2 million square feet of offices and research space. See article.
g AFTERMATH - If, as "The X-Files'" Fox Mulder might say, "The truth is out there," then the researchers running the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence program are likely to be the first ones to find it. On the other hand, there are numerous people who believe they've already been in contact with aliens. National Geographic's video "Phantom Quest: The Search for Extraterrestrials" studies the claims of both groups, ultimately seeking to reveal precisely what an encounter with beings from another planet could mean for humanity. See article.g ABODES - According to a new study by geologists, the wealth of some minerals that lie in the rock beneath the Earth's surface may be extraterrestrial in origin. See article.g LIFE - Conservation biologists are setting their minimum population size targets too low to prevent extinction. See article.g INTELLIGENCE - Centenarians with the bodies of 50-year-olds will one day be a realistic possibility, say scientists. See article.g MESSAGE - In late 1997, after almost 40 years of operation, the Ohio State University Radio Observatory and its "Big Ear" radio telescope - which picked up the famous "Wow!" signal - ceased operation. The land on which the observatory was sitting (owned by the Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio) was sold in 1983 to land developers who later claimed their rights to develop the property. It all sounds far-fetched, more fiction than fact, but it's all true. See article.g LEARNING - A new exhibition marking the 400th anniversary of Galileo's work is set to open in the Vatican. See article.g AFTERMATH - Few terms in the space vocabulary are as polarizing as this three-letter acronym: UFO. For some, it represents not just Unidentified Flying Objects, but a virtual universe of extraterrestrial visitations, alien abductions, and-of course-a vast web of government and multinational conspiracies to deny their presence. To others, it's a symbol of hoaxes and fantasies or, at best, wishful thinking. For those in the latter camp, there might be some trepidation to pick up a book titled "Beyond UFOs". Rest assured, though: despite the presence of that three-letter acronym, this book is actually a solid, factually-based look at the science of astrobiology and the prospects for lif e- intelligent or otherwise - elsewhere in the universe. UFO SIGHTING IN TEXAS ON OCTOBER 14TH 2013 - OBJECT APPEARED DUE WEST OF OUR HOME AS RED, WHITE, AND GREEN LIGHTS. SHAPE APPEARED TO BE CIRCULAR MOSTLY.
I took our dog out before bed time at around 1:20 a.m. on October 14, 2013. I observed a red, white, and green brightly lit object in the western sky moving from north to south then back again. It appeared to be going in a circular pattern. In recent months, I have seen a bluish green shooting star and also what I believe is a satellite in the sky west of our home. My eyes now automatically scan the skies in that direction. However, on the morning of October 14, 2013 I saw something unlike anything I had seen before. I ran back in to grab my video camera and yelled for my wife, who came outside immediately. Our next door neighbor was on her front porch smoking a cigarette. The three of us watched the object moving and hovering. We surmised that it was nothing more than a Remote Controlled aircraft. Then, just for our own peace of mind, got into our car and went searching for anyone outside who might be flying such a craft. In the meantime, the object had disappeared from sight. We drove around the neighborhood and around the area but found no one outside or any evidence of any activity. This is when everything started to point to something besides our initial assumptions. The most unsettling thing about the experience is not knowing or having the answers. We have video footage, such as it is, and will gladly share it with you for the sake of research.
